Nepotism is the act of employing, recruiting and promoting, or encouraging a family member and nepotist is one who practices same. This sort of treatment is given may be due to own personal preferences and intentions.
In business world it’s very popular and easily implemented in the form of favoritism by hiring family members and relatives only for economic and legacy purposes. For instance, granting favors or jobs to friends and relatives, without regard to excellence, quality, grades or merit, is a form of nepotism.
In business line it’s not unethical to hire your own family member because you own that venture from your investment and assiduous. It’s the owner’s choice and will to opt them as his successors. Perhaps it has trust issues or frame of mind. Nevertheless, successors also manifest dedication for the same as it is looked on as a evergreen custom so it’s not morally deniable.
Nepotism is in vogue in private companies also. But it can have unpropitious effects on a company's atmosphere. Employees to withstand nepotism at workplace frequently suffer decline in enthusiasm and morale. If employees feel like their workplaces promote partisanship, their attitudes and job satisfaction, loyalty and dedication will likely to abide. They even think to leave the same. However, the recruitment done through portals scrutinisation have positive impacts on their perceptions.
But for the long haul, performance of the company may suffer due to biased decision making, partial and unfair practices in the management. So the professionalism should be applied while checking on the feelings of the employees should be focused. Right person for the right job can be the policy. Human Resource Management would be the recruitment department only.
In politics it’s a culture. It started from the ages since kings ruled the countries when they declare their sons as their successors till date. Politicians and ministers also train their offspring to follow the same. Therefore as you know in politics you have the power to do so and no one can deny you if you are a leader and rule a regime. The picture continues similarly.
Admissions in schools, colleges and universities provides a glimpse of nepotism. The teachers and professors have their own quotas and reservations for the admissions of students which forcibly put an end to the deserving candidates when the seats get filled. The government exams and recruitment also realized the said culture when meritorious applicants don’t get selected in final interviews or somewhere some are seen giving money to get the job.
Basically the topic nepotism prevails because it suppress the right and genuine talents, capabilities, intellect, efficiency, skills and potentiality. If you are hired only because you are known to someone then it will effect the work level in case the person who is hired through this procedure doesn’t know the task well or have meager experience for the same.
